Using LockDown Browser and Blackboard for Secure Testing

Lockdown Browser is a web browser that students use to access a test within a Blackboard class. It disables all background apps from running, including the ability to take screenshots, use email, etc, and only Lockdown Browser showing our District’s Blackboard server is allowed to run.

The Lockdown Browser app is specific to our District and our Blackboard server, and has been pre-installed on all student laptops. It can be found in their Applications folder.

When a student opens Lockdown Browser it goes directly to our Blackboard server. They login and navigate into the proper course and take their test. Once they quit Lockdown Browser they can use any other application on their laptop as normal.

If a test is set to require Lockdown Browser and they try to use a standard browser such as Safari or Chrome they will receive an error and be unable to take the test.

Below are two documents that will walk you through how to setup and use Lockdown Browser with your students.

The first will apply to the vast majority of teachers. The second will apply ONLY to those that are beta testing the new, ‘Ultra’ version of Blackboard Learn Courses.
