Full STEAM Ahead
By Dustion Carlson and Alli Pontious
How can you get creativity, engagement, and community all tied into one? Oakdale and Rockbrook have done just that! For the last two years, these two schools have offered STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) nights to Westside families. These nights encourage family engagement along with critical thinking and problem solving with the use of a variety of activities in each station.
At the most recent STEAM night, families experienced virtual reality with Google Expeditions, explored the effects of wind with the use of a wind tunnel, created circuits with playdough, designed a tile using permanent markers, and built and raced balloon LEGO cars! The skills used in these stations help students develop a deeper understanding of problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking that they will use throughout life. Students and families travel to each station ready to explore and create during these engaging nights together. Families laugh together as they use their imaginations to problem solve and accept that failure is okay as long as you learn from it and try again.
Oakdale and Rockbrook hope to reach EVERY family at least once a year, and strive to offer more STEAM nights each year to help build a stronger partnership between students, schools, families, and the community.
